The
House Commerce Committee is where much of the big
business interests get legislation started. The Commerce
Committee was responsible for pushing through the Telecommunications
Act of 1996, degregulating the broadcast industry. This
allowed broadcasters to go from the limit of 12 stations
total, to owning an unlimited amount of stations. Consolodation,
termination of jobs, and homogenizaion of radio has been
the effect of this legislation.
Recently the committee was involved in the legislation of
LPFM, and these are the Congressional Representatives who
have received contributions from the National Association
of Broadcasters or other TV/Movies/Music Political Action
Committee.
The TV/Movies/Music industry which includes the NAB, Time
Warner, Viacom, Disney, ASCAP, BMI, National Cable Association,
Motion Picture Assn. of America, Media One, Sony,G.E. and
more. Together they have spent nearly $700,000 buying out
the Commerce Committee so far this year. The NAB spent over
$88,000 alone so far.
