Featured Penguin: Adelie

Here are some basic facts about penguins. Penguins do not live in the Artic, it's a misconception by most that penguins and polar bears live in the same regions. Penguins, although they are birds, cannot fly in the air, rather they fly underwater. Thier preys include Scua's (a sea bird ) and Leopard & Wettle Seals, and Killer Whales( which are acutally part of the porpoise family). Penguins are also a species that mates for life.
The featured penguin is the Adelie Penguin(Pygoscelis adeliae). The Adelie's live in the Antartic and are 28 inches (71.1 cm) tall and wiegh about 11 pounds (4.9kg). They eat plankton, squid and small fish. Thier heads, beaks, necks, backs, eyes and tails are all black with white on thier chests, abdomens, and legs. They also have a white ring around each eye.

The Adelies have the distinction of traveling the farthest of any of the other penguin breeds. Scientists believe they have exceptional navagational abilities because they travel 500 miles between feeding and breeding areas. In an experiment, a group of Adelies were dropped far inland on a flat area that had no discernable landmarks. As long as the sun was visable, the Adelies moved straight toward the coast. If the sun wasn't visable, they wandered or slept.

The Adelies courtship ceremony begins when the male drops a pebble at the feet of his intended. They begin to fight, but if the female is interested, the fight is very short. Once the mates have been selected, the males commence gathering more pebbles for thier nests.

A note of interest: The Adelie penguins were the ones featured in the recent childrens animated movie, The Pebble and the Penguin.
