Glad Tidings Church Vs. Ancient Ways in Yuba City
Here a a couple of tidbits I wanted to share with you about The Craft in the news. Recently a fax came in to me
at work (we subscribe to a daily show prep service) and on their "Surf Report" it had a feature on "Web Witches".
I was elated to see a paragraph and some links to some of my favorite haunts in the online Pagan Community.
From 9-18-97 edition of SW Networks daily show prep fax:
WEB WITCHES: The Internet, as you well know, is a place of true freedom; the Supreme Court has
recently come to bat in favor of free speech on the Net so netizens can feel free to express any personal
or religious feelings they have. (And that's pretty neat. What else do you expect from the country that invented
marshmallow Fluff and the Fourth of July). One quasi-religious group that has been flourishing on the 'Net
are witches - not the gnarly broom-straddling kind, but people who believe in the spirituality of everything,
especially in nature, and aren't bound by any specific rules. In fact, the only frightening thing some of them
do is listen to New Age music. For those of you of the Wiccan persuasion, here are a couple of websites for you:

This article ran in the September 18th edition of the local paper the Modesto Bee, although I did see
the article on our AP newswire and I hate to give much credit to the Bee for anything. This is a GREAT example of WHY Witches are given
such a bad image. The comments following are of my own opinion and have nothing to do with any press service.
Witchcraft Charges enliven Ventura trial
-The Associated Press
VENTURA, Ca - Diana Haun practiced witchcraft and gave her married lover his wife as a human sacrifice for an early
birthday present, a prosecutor in the murder triangle trial told jurors Wednesday.
Deputy District Attorney Lela Henke-Dobroth said in closing arguments that an inconvenient spouse, coupled with witchcraft and
sex, led to the kidnapping, bludgeoning, and beheading of Sherri Dally.
The prosecutor described a shopping spree Haun made, purchasing items he said she used to kidnap and kill the mother of two.
"She bought trash bags, she bought sunglasses, she bought a tan uniform, she bought the axe," Henke-Dobroth said.
"Diana Haun had a 15-18 minute window to struggle with the victim, bludgeon her, strike her on the head, stab her at least eight
times, hack her neck ... and push Sherri to the side of a ravine," she said.
The prosecution contends that Port Hueneme grocery store clerk and lover Michael Dally concocted an elaborate
scheme to get rid of his wife and avoid a potentially costly divorce.
The prosecutor referred to testimony from one of Haun's co-workers, who said Haun called herself a witch.
"Diana Haun has interest in witchcraft, reincarnation and that type of subject," Henke-Dobroth said.
"Sherri dally told Diana Haun that the only way she would get her husband and her two kids was over her dead body,
and apparently that stuck with Diana and that's what she intended to do," Henke-Dobroth said.
Haun and Dally were charged with murder, conspiracy and kidnapping, as well as two special-circumstance allegations - the killing was committed
for financial gain and occured while th eattacker was lying in wait.
Deputy Public Defender Neil Quinn contends that someone else kidnapped and killed Sherri Dally, 35, on May 6, 1996.
Quinn began his closing argument Wednesday afternoon.
Quinn said that prosecution is based soley on circumstantial evidence and no witness saw his client kidnap Sherri Dally.
Quinn also reminded the jury that Dally's ex-girlfriend Sally Lowe testified that Dally had talked about wanting to get
rid of his wife.
"Dally had a secret seperate world conected with the underworld and he told Sally Lowe all of these things," Quinn said.
"That's solid evidence that he had a huge pool of potential helpers help him commit the murder".
Earlier in the day, the prosecutor said there's no mysterious killer involved.
"Certainly, it's not about a phantom killer," the prosecutor told jurors. "There's only one person who did the murder
and that is Diana Haun."
If Haun, 36, is convicted of first-degree murder and at least one of the special circumstances, the same jury would
return for a penalty phase to decide if she should be sentenced to death or life in prison without parole.
Michael Dally's trial begins after Haun's.
My Comments on this case
First off, how many murders are centered around a persons religion? Why aren't murderers who are Christians
spotlighted as some sort of religious freak who has killed in the name of god? The only reason this story got any
press was the sensationalism of the witchcraft element. If we take it on the theory that this Diana Haun did commit the murder
and may have been a witch, it totally is an extreme case. For those who are witches and practice witchcraft know
to do harm to another being is to bring it upon yourself three-fold. The main law or rule of thumb witches live by
is "An it harm none, do as you will", plus the Karmic three-fold law. Between those beliefs, this woman could not in
a true since be a witch if she indeed did inflict these horrifying and fatal injuries. Now, if however she is
innocent of these charges, they are still ready to literally burn her at the steak. For the media attention to this
story is so spun in the direction of the witchcraft element, it makes real witches seem like they are all
capable of such vile acts. Being a witch, this kind of representation hurts my soul, but it's a prime example of
how damaging the media can be. For people who are of weak mind and spirit will beleive anything and everything they
read or hear. Yet when the truth is being told, they chose to turn away and discount the facts. I hope this article
shows just how ignorant people really are about The Craft and I hope that I can be one of the many who help to
educate and dispell such disgracing myths.
